Our Earth is made up of many things that make it unique in our solar system, weather is one of them. Weather changes from day to day, but patterns in weather and climate are too slow to be notice with a short study of weather. By making regular observations over time these changes become more noticeable. Daily weather changes with the seasons. People, animals and plants have adapted to the weather. Knowing what the weather will be or knowing the weather prediction can help us plan activities, wear the right clothing, and make the necessary arrangements for traveling.

Task

Sample Investigations/Teacher Resources

Task:

You have learned about the weather in previous years. Today you are going to apply this knowledge by identifying weather and climate. You are going to be divided into teams of four or five and will create a weather research center. The weather research center will investigate seasonal information to make the appropriate choice in clothing, recreational activities and the necessary arrangements for traveling.

Student Work

Standards (TEKS)

1. List your personal understanding, ideas or hunches.

Now that you are familiar with "Earth's Weather" you will write everything you know about Earth's Weather. Organize your thoughts or ideas using a concept map on what can we do to solve the problem. There are not incorrect answers in this step, just feel free to brainstorm your ideas.

2. List what is known.

With your team use all the information available in the scenario to list everything that you know about Earth's Weather. You do not have to conduct any research yet. Just use the information given and write the facts that you already know about Earth's Weather.

3. List what is unknown.

With your team, make a list about what you do not know and would like to learn. List all the questions you will need to answer to solve the problem.

5. List what needs to be done.
"What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., question an expert, conduct research, visit the library, check the internet on related topics. List possible actions that need to be taken to help with the weather problem.

6. Develop a problem statement.

You will be responsible for thinking and choosing one of the questions to solve the problem.  A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences, you should be able to describe what it is that your group is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. The problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation.

7. Gather information

Use all the resources available (Internet, library, you may want to interview a weather reporter, etc) to research about the problem/topic and find a solution.

8. Present Findings

Each team will do a presentation using prezi or spicynodes. Students need to follow the rubric that has been created for them.

Rubric:

Presentation Rubric.docx

2.8         Earth and space. The student knows that there are recognizable                    patterns in the natural world and among  objects in the sky. The                    student is expected to:

2.8A       Measure, record and graph weather information, including                            temperature, wind conditions, precipitation, and cloud coverage, in                order to justify patterns in data.

2.2         Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student develops abilities              necessary to do scientific inquiry in classroom and outdoor                            investigations.
