It is no secret that there is a water shortage not only in our state (Texas), but all over the world. In Texas we are facing record breaking heat and a very long drought. Last year some Texas cities experienced 100 days of 100 degree whether. The following link shares the story of residents of Spicewood, Texas who were and are facing a water shortage since the beginning of this year 2012.

As citizens of the Rio Grande Valley we must be proactive during these treacherous times.

Scenario: The Rio Grande Valley Regional Water Planning Group needs to create a new water conservation plan to help the RGV conserve water during the drought we are facing. They have hired you to create a brochure that will be mailed out to all residents of the Rio Grande Valley to create awareness of what is currently happening in other Texas cities, average water consumption during daily practices, how they can conserve water, and how much water they will save if they follow the steps given to them.

Task

Sample Investigations/Teacher Resources

Your group will be responsible researching water shortages and water conservation in Texas. You must create a brochure or flyer using on of the following Microsoft Office applications Word, Publisher, or PowerPoint. You must include a story of a place struggling with water shortages (preferably a city in Texas), a minimum of five daily activities that require water and the amount of water used (convert to gallons), a minimum of five different ways a household can conserve water and the amount of water your water conservation plan will conserve in one year if followed (convert to gallons).

Standards

1. List your personal understanding, ideas or hunches.

Now that you are familiar with **** you will write everything you know about ****. Describe your thoughts or ideas about how to solve the problem. There are not incorrect answers in this step, just feel free to brainstorm your ideas.

2. List what is known.

 With your team use all the information available in the scenario to list everything that you know about ****. You do not have to conduct any research yet. Just use the information given and write the facts that you already know about ****.

3. List what is unknown.

With your team, make a list about what you do not know and would like to learn. List all the questions you will need to answer to solve the problem.

5. List what needs to be done.
"What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., question an expert, get List possible actions.

6. Develop a problem statement.

You will be responsible for thinking and choosing one of the questions to solve the problem.  A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences, you should be able to describe what it is that your group is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. The problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation.

7. Gather information

Use all the resources available (Internet, library, etc) to research about the problem/topic and find a solution.

8. Present Findings

****Determine how students will present findings****

6.3 Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking. The student solves problems involving direct proportional relationships.The student is expected to:

(A)  use ratios to describe proportional situations;

(B)  represent ratios and percents with concrete models, fractions, and decimals; and (C)  use ratios to make predictions in proportional situations.

6.8 Measurement. The student solves application problems involving estimation and measurement of length, area, time, temperature, volume, weight, and angles. The student is expected to

(D) convert measures within the same measurement system (customary and metric) based on relationships between units.

6.11Underlying processes and mathematical tools. The student applies Grade 6 mathematics to solve problems connected to everyday experiences, investigations in other disciplines, and activities in and outside of school. The student is expected to:

(A)  identify and apply mathematics to everyday experiences, to activities in and outside of school, with other disciplines, and with other mathematical topics;

(B)  use a problem-solving model that incorporates understanding the problem, making a plan, carrying out the plan, and evaluating the solution for reasonableness;
