Numbers are all around us. We need them to count things, to count money, and to tell others the amount we want of something to name a few reasons we need numbers.
Images/Video Resources
Scenario
Numbers make the world go round. Numbers have been around for many, many years.
Numbers are how we make connections with how much of something we want. When you buy a car or decorate your home, you're using numbers.
I know that you know that numbers are for counting.
Are these the only reasons we need numbers? Why are numbers important in our lives?
Task
Sample Investigations/Teacher Resources
I'm not sure you know how important numbers are in your life. Your team will study numbers 0-30 and how they are important in our lives. Then your team must demonstrate how numbers are important on your campus. You may not use the classroom as one of the places. You will take a picture of a place on your campus and study the picture to determine how numbers are important in that area of the school.

You are part of the number club because you know your numbers from 0-30. Don't forget to come up with a fun activity to teach the other kinder teachers to teach number to their students.
1. List your personal understanding, ideas or hunches.
Now that you are familiar with numbers 0-30 you will write everything you know about numbers 0-30. Describe your thoughts or ideas about how to solve the problem. There are not incorrect answers in this step, just feel free to brainstorm your ideas.
2. List what is known.
With your team use all the information available in the scenario to list everything that you know about numbers 0-30. You do not have to conduct any research yet. Just use the information given and write the facts that you already know about numbers 0-30.
3. List what is unknown.
With your team, make a list about what you do not know and would like to learn. List all the questions you will need to answer to solve the problem.
5. List what needs to be done. "What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., question an expert, conduct research, go to a board meeting about topic. List possible actions.
6. Develop a problem statement.
You will be responsible for thinking and choosing one of the questions to solve the problem. A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences, you should be able to describe what it is that your group is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. The problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation.
7. Gather information
Use all the resources available (Internet, library, etc) to research about the problem/topic and find a solution.
8. Present Findings
You will choose a number that is used in that area and make a poster of that number and show the amount that number demonstrates using any objects of your choice. You will write a sentence to tell how that number is important in that area. Add your picture to your poster. Posters will be presented to the class.
