Some primary lab tools that we might need in our science lab.

Scenario

Talk about lab safety here.  Why does it matter?

Task

Sample Investigations/Teacher Resources

Our school has been chosen by a national science lab equipment company to start up a lower grade science lab.  The upper grades already have a running science lab, so the company wants to provide a running science lab for the lower grades.  The president of the company has asked all the first grade classes to come up with a list of all the science lab materials they think the lab will need. She wants the first grade classes to create a presentation of all the equipment they will need. She does not just want a list of materials.

The president wants to be convinced that our school deserves a second science lab. She wants to know why we need the euqipment, what it will be used for, and if the lower grades will really use it when they come to the science lab.  The first grade classes need to be prepared with their presentations when the president of the company comes to our school to supply our lower grades with a science lab.  We want to WOW the president so we can get as much science equipment as we can for the coming year and for the years to come.

Your task as a grade level will be to research all the possible science lab equipment our lower grade science lab will need and use. There are 7 classses so each class will be responsible for at least coming up with 5 science lab equipment materials that will be needed. Each teacher will cross reference with each other to make sure equipment is not doubled.  Once the teachers approve the chosen equipment then each class will put together a presentation that will convince the president of the company to supply the science lab with the chosen materials.

As a class you need to make sure you have the actual equipment with you or a picture of it. You need to know the name of the equipment and what it is used for. You also need to know why we need to have it in the science lab.

Here is a sample list with pictures of what might be needed in a lower grade science lab.  If you have a tool not shown here please feel free to use it in the presentation.

Student Work

Standards/TEKS

1. Read and analyze the scenario and situation.
Check your understanding of the scenario. Don't be tempted to start thinking about potential solutions or to start looking for information.

1. List your personal understanding, ideas or hunches.

Now that you are familiar with science lab equipment you will write everything you know about the 5 lab equipment pieces that have been chosen. Describe your thoughts or ideas about you are going to explain what each equipment is and what it is used for. There are no incorrect answers in this step, just feel free to brainstorm your ideas.

2. List what is known.

With your class use all the information available in the scenario to list everything that you know about the lower grade science lab. You do not have to conduct any research yet. Just use the information given and write the facts that you already know about science lab equipment.

3. List what is unknown.

With your class, make a list about what you do not know and would like to learn. List all the questions you will need to answer to solve what lab equpiment the lab will need.

4. List what needs to be done.
"What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., question an expert, conduct research. List possible actions.

5. Develop a problem statement.

You will be responsible for thinking and choosing one of the questions to solve the problem.  A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences, you should be able to describe what it is that the class is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. The problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation.

6. Gather information

Use all the resources available (Internet, library, upper grade science lab, etc) to research about the problem/topic and find a solution.

7. Present Findings

The class will present their findings with real science lab equipment and use Web 2.0 Prezi to show pictures of the lab equipment with the name added to it. They will also give a brief explanantion of what the lab equipment is used for and why it needs to be in the science lab.

(4) Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student uses age-appropriate tools and models to investigate the natural world. The student is expected to:

(A) collect, record, and compare information using tools, including computers, hand lenses, primary balances, cups, bowls, magnets, collecting nets, notebooks, and safety goggles; timing devices, including clocks and timers; non-standard measuring items such as paper clips and clothespins; weather instruments such as classroom demonstration thermometers and wind socks; and materials to support observations of habitats of organisms such as aquariums and terrariums
