Throughout world history, there have been people that contributed in great manner to the humanity for their outstanding math knowledge and their contributions still impact our lives nowadays.
You have been hired as an intern by an educational graphic design company whose main business is to produce posters and learning material for the schools. The company is in the process of creating new products for the upcoming year. Your first assignment is to research the biographies of the greatest mathematicians throughout history. You will have to create a list of the 10 mathematicians whose life most impacted humanity and then you will choose only 3 of them. Your supervisor has given you one week to finish your research and design a poster for each one of the three mathematicians that you chose. Once you are done, you will have to conduct a presentation in order to show your work to the Design and Marketing departments of the company. When they approve your work, those posters will be manufactured and sold to the clients.
You will be responsible of creating a presentation that includes the list of the 10 greatest mathematicians by using the web 2.0 tool of your preference (slideshare, prezi, capzels, etc.)
Also you will design and create three multimedia posters by using the web 2.0 tool called Glogster. The Glogster needs to include the following information: Name, short biography, remarkable works, a quote, and an example problem whose solution is found by applying the principles discovered by that mathematician. (Ex. For Pythagoras, you could come up with a problem that uses the Pythagorean theorem to be solved.). One of the mathematicians needs to be of the 20th century.
The poster design must be eye-catching and appealing to the students, make sure the information you use in it comes from trusted sites.
1. List your personal understanding, ideas or hunches.
Now that you are familiar with outstanding mathematicians you will write everything you know about mathematicians. Describe your thoughts or ideas about how to solve the problem. There are not incorrect answers in this step, just feel free to brainstorm your ideas.
2. List what is known.
With your team use all the information available in the scenario to list everything that you know about mathematicians. You do not have to conduct any research yet. Just use the information given and write the facts that you already know about mathematicians.
3. List what is unknown.
With your team, make a list about what you do not know and would like to learn. List all the questions you will need to answer to solve the problem.
5. List what needs to be done. "What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., question an expert, conduct research, go to a board meeting about topic. List possible actions.
6. Develop a problem statement.
You will be responsible for thinking and choosing one of the questions to solve the problem. A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences, you should be able to describe what it is that your group is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. The problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation.
7. Gather information
Use all the resources available (Internet, library, etc) to research about the problem/topic and find a solution.
8. Present Findings
You will present your three Glogsters to the entire classroom.
ALGEBRA 1:
A) Basic understandings.
(1) Foundation concepts for high school mathematics. As presented in Grades K-8, the basic understandings of number, operation, and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; geometry; measurement; and probability and statistics are essential foundations for all work in high school mathematics. Students will continue to build on this foundation as they expand their understanding through other mathematical experiences.
