Scenario

Science Lab Safety and Procedures is always covered at the beginning of every school year to remind students to be safe during outside and inside investigations and experiments.  It is also part of our TEKS and for our students to always be safe and to take precautionary measures.  We should also know how to dispose of materials and conserve our resources.

Scenario:  Mrs. Cabrera was asked by her principal to open up a new Science Laboratory for the campus to help increase the Science scores in the S.T.A.R.R. state examinations.  Mrs. Cabrera needs help in ordering materials and supplies for the laboratory.  She needs a list of scientific tools and instruments. Science lab safety and procedures are also very important. Please, assist Mrs. Cabrera in setting up our new Science Lab. This will be a good time to get to know one another and work together. Thank you students for your good citizenship in helping your teacher.

Task

Sample Investigations/Teacher Resources

Your task as a group, is to come up with a list of scientific tools/instruments with their names and functions and create a PowerPoint presentation.  Your slideshow must include a title slide and at least 15 scientific tools.  Your group must also make a poster of Lab Safety & Procedures to be posted for the classroom (include illustrations).  Your poster must have at least 10 rules.  A sample powerpoint presentation is provided and a list of resources have also been listed to get you started.

Student Work

Standards: (Texas TEKS)

1. List your personal understanding, ideas or hunches.

Now that you are familiar with lab safety and procedures, you will write everything you know about lab safety and procedures. Describe your thoughts or ideas about how to solve the problem. There are no incorrect answers in this step, just feel free to brainstorm your ideas.

2. List what is known.

With your team use all the information available in the scenario to list everything that you know about lab safety and procedures. You do not have to conduct any research yet. Just use the information given and write the facts that you already know about lab safety and procedures.

3. List what is unknown.

With your team, make a list about what you do not know and would like to learn. List all the questions you will need to answer to solve the problem.

5. List what needs to be done.
"What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., question an expert, get List possible actions.  Assign duties to all members in your group so that it is a team effort and not just one person doing all of the work.

6. Develop a problem statement.

You will be responsible for thinking and choosing one of the questions to solve the problem.  A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences, you should be able to describe what it is that your group is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. The problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation.  (Refer back to #2.)

7. Gather information

Use all the resources available (Internet, library, etc) to research about the problem/topic and find a solution.  See Mrs. Rodriguez, our librarian for assistance on your two projects.  She may be able to help you find books and other resources.

8. Present Findings:

1.  A PowerPoint Presentation with Scientific tools with their

name & a brief description of their function.

2.  A Poster of Lab Safety Rules & Procedures.

Be creative and feel free to use illustrations.

2.1A identify and demonstrate safe practices as described in the Texas Safety Standards during classroom and outdoor investigations, including wearing safety goggles, washing hands, and using materials appropriately

http://www.utdanacenter.org/sciencetoolkit/safety/texas_safety.php

2.1B describe the importance of safe practices

2.1C identify and demonstrate how to use, conserve, and dispose of natural resources and materials
