Scenario

Water scarcity is among the main problems to be faced by many societies and the World in the XXIst century. Water use has been growing at more than twice the rate of population increase in the last century, and, although there is no global water scarcity as such, an increasing number of regions are chronically short of water.

Water scarcity is both a natural and a human-made phenomenon. There is enough freshwater on the planet for six billion people but it is distributed unevenly and too much of it is wasted, polluted and unsustainably managed.

Do you know how much water do you use per day? Do you know the average usage per person in other areas of the world? Could you imagine to live without running water?

You have been chosen as a representative from you school to go and present innovative ways to save water to the United Nations agents.

Task

Sample Investigations/Teacher Resources

You and your team will investigate about water scarcity and water consumption. You will also investigate or find ways in which you can contribute to the reduction of the use of water and its conservation. You will choose the best innovative ways and make a presentation by using Prezi. Must present a minimum of 10 ways to reduce water consumption.

Student Work

Standards

1. List your personal understanding, ideas or hunches.

Now that you are familiar with water consumption you will write everything you know about water usage. Describe your thoughts or ideas about how to solve the problem. There are not incorrect answers in this step, just feel free to brainstorm your ideas.

2. List what is known.

With your team use all the information available in the scenario to list everything that you know about water usage. You do not have to conduct any research yet. Just use the information given and write the facts that you already know about water usage.

3. List what is unknown.

With your team, make a list about what you do not know and would like to learn. List all the questions you will need to answer to solve the problem.

5. List what needs to be done.
"What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., question an expert, conduct research, go to a board meeting about topic. List possible actions.

6. Develop a problem statement.

You will be responsible for thinking and choosing one of the questions to solve the problem.  A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences, you should be able to describe what it is that your group is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. The problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation.

7. Gather information

Use all the resources available (Internet, library, etc) to research about the problem/topic and find a solution.

8. Present Findings

You will present ways in which you could reduce the use of water by using Prezi.

(G.5) Geometric patterns: The student uses a variety of representations to describe geometric relationships and solve problems.
