Scenario
The fact of the matter is that US population in general has been getting fatter and fatter in the last 30 years or so. The US's children population have not been the exception.
According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents has almost tripled".1 This is a problem that is affecting all of US children but seems to be having a greater negative effect on minority groups such as the Latino and African-American populations. If you were not aware of this issue, watch the following Youtube video to get an idea of the magnitude of this problem:
Study the following map:
2010 State Obesity Prevalence Among Low-Income Children Aged 2 to 4 Years2
Look closely at Texas. According to the map, Texas has more obese 2-4 year old than any of the states that it is surrounded by. In fact in this map Texas is one of the nation's most obese states. Do you think that this is the case? Have you looked at your community, your relatives and others schoolmates? Have you looked at yourself? Take a look if you haven't done so already. Do make fun of others because they are fat, just as you wouldn't like them to make fun of you if you are the one overweight. Yet, observe and be critical.
Do you think that there is a problem with child obesity in your community? Why do you think that this is the case? If you think that there is a problem in your community with child obesity, why do you think that this is the case? What are some of the factors that are contributing to the problem? What can your community do in order to reverse the negative effects of this trend?

Sample Investigations/Teacher Resources
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website offers some solutions to tackle child obesity. These solutions are offered here:
When the director of the CDC, Thomas R. Frieden, was reviewing the CDC's website, he noticed that child obesity solutions are layout for states and parents but he couldn't find a set of guidelines from the children's perspective. He has randomly selected your school and grade level to come up with a set of guidelines and recommendations to fight child obesity.
Do not provide a 'copy-and-paste' solution. Go online, consult with your librarian, ask your teacher, have a hall-town meeting with community members. In other words, brainstorm and filter the best practices and solutions. Good luck.
1. List your personal understanding, ideas or hunches.
Now that you are familiar with child obesity you will write everything you know about it. Describe your thoughts or ideas about how to solve the problem. There are not incorrect answers in this step, just feel free to brainstorm your ideas.
2. List what is known.
With your team use all the information available in the scenario to list everything that you know about child obesity. You do not have to conduct any research yet. Just use the information given and write the facts that you already know about this issue.
3. List what is unknown.
With your team, make a list about what you do not know and would like to learn. List all the questions you will need to answer to solve the problem.
4. List what needs to be done. "What should we do?" List actions to be taken, e.g., question an expert, conduct research, go to a board meeting about topic. List possible actions.
5. Develop a problem statement.
You will be responsible for thinking and choosing one of the questions to solve the problem. A problem statement should come from your analysis of what you know. In one or two sentences, you should be able to describe what it is that your group is trying to solve, produce, respond to, or find out. The problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation.
6. Gather information
Use all the resources available (Internet, library, etc) to research about the problem/topic and find a solution.
7. Present Findings
The students will present their results using through a wiki.
