Sample Floor Plan- Architects use floor plans to design buildings and homes.

Scenario

Sea turtles are beautiful animals that have inhabited the ocean for millions of years. However, today sea turtles face many different threats that have made them an endangered species

According to a news article found in the Valley Morning Star in 2011, South Padre Island, Texas was hit by a massive cold front that plummeted the temperature of the ocean below freezing. Along the South Padre Island coast, more than 600 sea turtles washed upon shore, cold-stunned and dying. With the overwhelming amount of sea turtles in need of help, volunteers at Sea Turtle Inc.  scrambled to find room to house the sea turtles until they could safely return them to warmer waters. Due to the fridget temperatures and lack of resources many sea turtles died of hypothermia.

Your Task!

Sample Investigations/Teacher Resources

You and your team are Junior Architects who have been hired by Sea Turtle Inc. on South Padre Island to design a Sea Turtle Rescue Center that will house and care for injured and sick sea turtles found along the coast of South Padre IslandThe contractors or the people who are in charge of building the center will need your plans to include the perimeter and area of all locations found in your design. Make sure you think about all the necessary rooms and areas sea turtles might need in order to be given proper care. Keep in mind the number of Sea Turtles your center will accomodate, a name for your center, location, and a description of all the areas included in your plans.

Problem Based Learning Lesson on Perimeter- This lesson has students design a fence for a new playground at their school.

Problem Based Learning Lesson on Area- This lesson has students develop a garden for their school using area.

Grading Rubric- These rubrics are designed to give students the criteria for grading of their presentation and team work skills.
